I cannot think of a picture that sums him up more than this 2002 publicity shot, which was taken for a spoof article in Tropical Fish magazine, but which the late and semi-lamented Simon W refused to use....

AND HOW COULD I HAVE FORGOTTEN?
Richard Freeman, one of my dearest friends and a collabarateur for fifteen years, was 40 yesterday. Enjoy it, mate! In November Sahar Dimus, our guide on four CFZ Sumatra expeditions, died of liver failure leaving a widow Lucy and four Children. On the 2nd November, Dezyama D. Sangma, wife of our friend and colleague Dipu Marak, our collaborator on the 2010 Indian expedition died, leaving her grieving husband and two small children.
